"Hope and Attendants," by Edward Simmons, in the arch of the Setting Sun, on the northern wall. From left to right the figures signify true hope and false hope, adventure playing with a bubble, commerce, inspiration, truth, religion, health and the mother and child, civilization as revealed in the family. The lovely figure in the center with the left arm raised bears a striking resemblance to Mary Anderson, the American actress, as she appeared when she left the stage, in the height of her success. The coloring is particularly fine, and the panel as a whole is full of poetic suggestion. |
