"Fountain of the Earth"
"Fountain of the Earth," by Robert Aitken, in the Court of Ages. Southern mass: Destiny, almost submerged; left arm gives life; right takes life away. Left hand commands woman to wake from pre-natal sleep; she obeys; she feels the joy of living; man comes with love; they gave the earth children. Around globe, four open panels: Primitive type with vanity, and woman resisting lust; natural selection; contention; older generation vainly advises young lovers. Hermes, between groups, suggests end of periods of time. The serpent typifies the fire of the sun.
