In fact, data from several sociological studies covering domestic violence show that women do perpetrate domestic violence on men, just not nearly as often as men do on women. Generally, the media, law enforcement, and average citizens incorrectly view domestic violence as a crime committed solely by men on their female intimate partners or spouses (read Domestic Violence Laws and Charges of Domestic Abuse ). This causes most of the funding for research on domestic violence and support of victims to get overwhelmingly funneled toward programs that focus on women. Why does intimate partner violence against men remain in the shadows? Many people view male victims of domestic violence as sissies or as weak. This typical attitude makes men reluctant to admit that their partners physically abuse them for fear of being labeled as weak and unmanly. Even when domestic violence against men turns fatal, as it did with celebrity Phil Hartman, the news coverage usually departs from focusing on domestic violence and centers on mental illness. Most information on the physical abuse of men is anecdotal because funding for studying the problem is scarce. Scientific studies addressing the problem are urgently needed. Although not considered scientific in the traditional sense, over 200 studies that used surveys as the primary method for gathering data indicate that 50 percent of all domestic violence cases involve an exchange of blows. The 50 percent of cases where the violence is one-sided is equally split between males and females who are battered by their spouses or intimate partners. The National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) funded the only national, scientific study for measuring the impact of domestic violence against men. This further implies that violence against men is a mental health issue, rather than a crime. Recently, the Department of Justice backed off of their refusal to allocate funds for the study of domestic violence against men ??? and only then if the study grants equal time to investigating violence against women. The list below includes a small sampling of examples of domestic violence against men. Domestic abuse includes not only physical violence, but verbal, emotional, and financial violence as well. If you need help, call The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women at 1-888-HELPLINE. This non-profit organization addresses domestic violence against both men and women with equal urgency. Domestic violence counseling and domestic violence therapy represent powerful tools for helping victims of domestic violence get to safety and heal. Abused adults and children both need domestic violence counseling in order to move past their traumatic experiences. Left untreated, physically and emotionally abused children carry the emotional and physical scars of the abuse into adulthood. When this type of trauma is left to itself, it may manifest in adulthood in the form of lost jobs, broken relationships, substance abuse, and other unhealthy behavior.

Binge Eating / Compulsive Overeating Joanna Poppink is has been treating adult women with eating disorders for over three decades. Her site, Triumphant Journey: A Cyberguide To Stop Overeating and Recover from Eating Disorders resides in the HealthyPlace Eating Disorders Community. Our topic tonight is Binge Eating/Compulsive Overeating. Our guest tonight is psychotherapist, Joanna Poppink, MFCC. Joanna has been in private practice in Los Angeles, California for nearly 18 years. In her practice, she has worked with many overeaters and helped them deal with the challenges they face because of their overeating. In addition, Joanna has written a guidebook of sorts, which is posted on the internet entitled: "Triumphant Journey: A Cyberguide to Stop Overeating and Recover From Eating Disorders". Good evening Joanna and welcome to the Concerned Counseling website. My work involves research, deep intimate work with individuals and also explorations into the community with a focus on 12 step programs. In addition, I am continually discovering that metaphors from biology and various sciences, coupled with dream work helps individuals get a closer appreciation and understanding of their own situation. Joanna Poppink: The short answer to this complex and personal question is this: people overeat or binge because they are experiencing some kind of stress for which they have no tools or skills to handle. This does not, not, not, mean that over eaters or binge eaters have a personal deficiency. However, somewhere in their history, they learned to cope with stress through food behaviors because they had no access to other methods of protection, adaptation or development. First, everyone who comes into therapy is in a different stage of their eating disorder. Some people have been binging and purging for a year or so. Others have been engaging in various eating disorder behaviors for as much as 25 or 35 years. So there is, as you can imagine, a tremendous range of awareness levels.

Electroconvulsive therapy discount super p-force 160mg with visa, once known as shock therapy discount super p-force 160 mg amex, is a safe and effective treatment for depression and other mental illnesses. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is most often used in cases of severe, intractable, hard to treat (treatment-resistant) depression. Generally, ECT is a short-term treatment where the patient receives 6-12 treatments over the course of 2-4 weeks. However, in some cases continuation ECT or maintenance ECT is used. These two therapies continue ECT beyond the initial 6-12 sessions used in acute treatment. This initial acute treatment is known as an "index series" or a "course" of ECT. Most frequently, prevention of relapse is accomplished through the use of medication but continuation ECT has also been shown effective for the prevention of illness relapse. Continuation ECT is electroconvulsive therapy continued for approximately the six months following the initial index series. Continuation ECT involves a treatment once every 1-6 weeks. Continuation ECT is typically used for patients who have initially positively responded to ECT and can give informed consent for its further use. Often those who do not respond to medication choose continuation ECT. Maintenance ECT consists of ECT treatments given infrequently over a long period of time after the index series and continuation ECT. The goal of maintenance ECT is to prevent the reoccurrence of the mental illness. Maintenance ECT may be given for months or even years with approximately one ECT treatment every three weeks. Maintenance ECT has been shown safe and effective in preventing illness reoccurrence. When maintenance ECT is combined with psychiatric medication treatment, it appears to be more effective than either medication or maintenance ECT alone. For some, the probable cause or causes of their depression can be found but for many, it cannot. Depression is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic, physical and psychological factors. Here is a look at what can, and cannot, cause depression. Birth control comes in many forms but all birth control contains differing amounts of estrogen and progestin (including progestin-only pills). While hormones are known to play a role in depression, birth control rarely causes depression; although it is more likely in pills higher in progestin. Depression has been reported as a birth control side effect; however, birth control pills have also been shown safe in women with depression. Alcohol is a depressant and acts on the brain in varied and complex ways. Among other things, alcohol affects serotonin and glutamate, two chemicals thought to play a role in depression and about 40% of those who drink heavily show depressive symptoms. While alcohol likely does not cause depression directly, drinking does increase the risk of depression and tends to worsen existing depression symptoms.

In fact, one in three victims of family violence is a man. And while women are often afraid to speak out against their abusers, battered husbands may speak out even less frequently due to the erroneous belief that it somehow denigrates their manhood. Dating violence is violence that occurs within a dating relationship rather than, say, marriage; and dating violence is as much a problem for teenagers as it is for adults. In fact, statistics show that one-in-three teenagers have experienced teenage domestic violence in a dating relationship. In 1995, 7% of all murder victims were young women who were killed by their boyfriends. In situations of dating violence, one partner tries to exert power and control over the other partner through physical abuse or sexual assault. Emotional abuse is commonly present alongside the physical abuse or sexual abuse that takes place. Sexual violence in dating relationships is also a major concern. Dating violence seems to decrease once young adults move beyond being a teenager. Part of this may be because of the way teenagers see themselves and because of their newness to dating. According to The Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence, young men and women may have certain beliefs that lead to higher incidence of dating violence. There are many warning signs of dating abuse and they should always be taken seriously. You may be assaulted by verbal abuse at work, at home, at school, on the road, or walking through a park, and there is nothing you can do to prevent it. You could even be a victim of verbal abuse if you live alone because if your self-talk, the voice in your head, diminishes you or your belief in yourself in any way, then you subject yourself to verbal abuse when you allow your inner critic to put you down. Verbal abuse is the most common way to attempt to control the behavior, thoughts, and feelings of another human being.
